Michael W. Carter II

Carter (As he is Known) was born, raised, and resides in Denver, Colorado. A graduate of Denver East High School's Class of 2011, he chose an unconventional path to cybersecurity and multimedia expertise.

Despite the opportunity to attend an internationally recognized private university at heavily discounted tuition due to his father's two-decade tenure as a foreman, Carter decided to forge his own path. At 18, he began working at Denver International Airport in a ground support entry-level position. Through determination and operational excellence, he climbed the ranks to Tower Operations as a Sr. Operations Manager, overseeing hub operations for a major airline. In this role, he managed 180+ daily flights, 35,000 passengers, 12 departments, and 1,200 employees.

Following a company layoff, Carter pursued a childhood aspiration: law enforcement. He joined the campus police department at the same university his father had served for decades, starting as an officer patrolling the campus on night shift. Command staff quickly recognized his operational leadership potential and asked him to stand up their newly established Communications Center Department, building the training program and staffing for 24/7/365 operations from the ground up. His success led to promotion to Department Operations Director, where he served on command staff until leaving to provide full-time care for a family member.

Carter's path to cybersecurity emerged unexpectedly during the pandemic. While troubleshooting network issues affecting voice chat in a video game one night, he discovered his equipment couldn't resolve a NAT problem. Research led him to Ubiquiti's UniFi platform. He purchased his first piece of gear and dove in, learning through YouTube tutorials, testing, and hands-on experimentation until he not only solved the gaming issue but transformed his entire network experience. He was hooked.

A couple months later, a friend referred him to interview for a support desk position at Pax8. The recruiter recognized that Carter's operational background and infectious personality made him a better fit for the Solutions Engineering team. Half a decade later, Carter leads identity, network, and endpoint security initiatives as a Sr. Solutions Engineer for Pax8, a leading cloud marketplace serving managed service providers globally.

As Founder and CEO of Nomaden, a Colorado-based firm with technology and multimedia divisions, Carter specializes in helping MSPs and enterprises design security architectures and identity-centric security programs to beat the breach before zero-day exploits strike. His expertise spans Zero Trust architecture, Network infrastructures and Network Security, identity security and fabric, cloud security, endpoint security, cyber threat intelligence, open source intelligence, cyber security analysis, incident response, risk management, business continuity and disaster recovery operations, and IT governance.
